Senator Bob Menendez and Wife Face 45 Years in Prison
Bribery, Corruption Trial Delayed
Indictment Details Alleged Crimes
US Senator Bob Menendez and his wife, Nadine Arslanian Menendez, have been indicted on bribery and corruption charges. They face a maximum sentence of 45 years in prison if convicted. The indictment alleges that the couple accepted bribes in exchange for official favors while Menendez was a senator from New Jersey.
The trial was scheduled to begin on October 1, but it was delayed indefinitely after Nadine Menendez's attorneys filed a motion to dismiss the indictment. The motion argues that the indictment is based on insufficient evidence and that some of the charges violate the Constitution.
The allegations against the Menendezes stem from a years-long investigation by the US Attorney's Office in New Jersey. The investigation began in 2013, when it was alleged that the Menendezes had accepted bribes from a prominent Florida eye doctor in exchange for political favors. The indictment alleges that the bribes included free vacations, campaign contributions, and donations to a charity controlled by the Menendezes.
If convicted, the Menendezes would be facing significant prison sentences. Bob Menendez, 64, is a Democrat who has served in the Senate since 2006. Nadine Menendez, 50, is a former real estate developer. The couple has two children together.
