Mental Health Funding Increases in New York, Hochul Announces

New York's Mental Health Funding Increase

On Wednesday, March 8th, 2023, New York Governor Kathy Hochul announced an additional $1 billion in funding for mental health services. This will boost the state's total investment in mental health to $1.1 billion, a 10% increase from the previous year's budget.

The Funding Distribution

  • $250 million will be allocated to expanding access to mental health services in underserved communities.
  • $250 million will be used to create new and renovate existing mental health facilities.
  • $100 million will be invested in training and hiring more mental health professionals.
  • $100 million will be dedicated to promoting mental health awareness and reducing stigma.
  • $100 million will be used to support research into new and innovative mental health treatments.

This funding increase is part of Governor Hochul's larger plan to address the growing mental health crisis in New York. According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), over 2 million New Yorkers experience mental health conditions each year. However, only 40% of those who need mental health services actually receive them.

The funding increase will allow New York to expand access to mental health services, reduce wait times for appointments, and improve the quality of care for people with mental health conditions. It is a significant step towards improving mental health outcomes in New York and ensuring that everyone has access to the care they need.
